Tips to Control Ants

It is important to note that different ant infestations require different treatment methods and actions. It is also important to know that all Dallas ant exterminators are not the same. Trust in Miss Phoebe's Pest & Termite Control – we have over six decades of experience.

Some things that you can do to help control ants in general include:

  • Ensuring garbage and any food waste is disposed of consistently
  • Cutting tree limbs so that they do not touch the roofline
  • Pest proofing entry points
  • Keeping your home or business as clean as possible
  • Wiping up spills
  • Putting food away immediately in sealed containers

While cleanliness and pests do not always go hand and hand, it always a good idea to practice good sanitation when it comes to controlling ants. See below for more information about ants and control methods for some of the most difficult ants to control in your home or business!

Ants in Texas

Most ants in the Dallas Fort Worth area prefer the great outdoors rather than hanging out inside your home or business, but occasionally the hunt for food can lead them into your home or business.

Here are some of the most common ants you will see in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex:

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter Ant

Carpenter ants typically nest outdoors in stumps and logs that are in contact with the soil as well as dead tree limbs and cavities. Sometimes carpenter ants will make their nest in homes, especially in wood damaged areas of the structures by termites, fungi, and/or moisture. While carpenter ants do not eat wood, the galleries they excavate can be quite extensive.

Control Tips for Carpenter Ants:

Successfully controlling carpenter ants requires certain skills, knowledge, and experience. Carpenter ant control involves tracking down and treating as many satellite colonies as possible inside and outside of the home as well as attempting to find and treat the parent colony.

Accessing the parent colony may be difficult because it might be located high in a tree or on a neighboring property. In such cases, your service professional may use carpenter ant baits, but these may have varying results because of the carpenter ants' finicky feeding habits

If conditions on your property (such as many trees) create a high risk for re-infestation, your service professional may recommend regular pest management services to help prevent future infestations.

Odorous House Ants

Odorous House Ant

Odorous house ants are small ants, at about 1/8th inch long, and are dark brown in color. Their name comes from the foul odor of rotten coconuts that is given off when the worker ants are crushed.

Odorous house ants regularly forage for food along well-traveled trails. They feed on dead insects, sweets, and meats.

Control Tips for Odorous House Ants:

  • Eliminate piles of lumber, bricks, or other debris that could serve as a nesting site for ants.
  • Keep landscape mulch less than 2 inches thick and at least 12 inches away from foundations.
  • Ensure the sprinkler system does not spray directly onto the foundation.
  • Seal as many cracks in the home's exterior as possible.
  • Keep tree and shrub branches trimmed to prevent them from touching the building.

Pharaoh Ants

Pharaoh Ant

Pharaoh ants are small red to yellowish ants that can nest in wall voids, cabinets, boxes of food, and any other accessible crevices and spaces. They are even known to invade sick rooms and feed on blood plasma and wound dressings.

Acrobat Ants

Acrobat Ant

Acrobat ants get their name because of the way the worker ants carry their abdomens above the rest of the body as if they were performing a balancing act. Acrobat ants are slightly longer than 1/8th inch. They vary in color from yellowish-brown to dark brown, and the heart-shaped abdomen is usually darker than the rest of the body. When acrobat ants nest indoors, they are usually inside wood or cavities kept moist with water from leaks. As they excavate the large galleries used as nest sites, sawdust may be deposited near the nest area.

Thief Ants

Thief Ant

Thief ants Tare so tiny they can sometimes go undetected for weeks. They earn their title by feeding off the larvae of other ant species. Commonly seen around the kitchen sink or pantry, they go for cheeses, greasy foods, meats, and sometimes sweets.

Argentine Ants

Argentine Ant

Among the many species who like honey, syrups, and jellies, Argentine ants are also meat-eaters, and they can severely damage orchard crops. Indoors, you can find these ants crawling around electrical outlets, kitchen counters, and on bathroom ceilings at any time of the year.

Red Imported Fire Ants

Red Imported Fire Ant

Usually a reddish-brown color, fire ants live in colonies of up to 200,000 individuals with mounds that can be 2 feet high and 3 feet across with as many as 50 colonies per acre. Their painful, burning sting results in pustules that take up to 10 days to heal. Some people are extremely allergic to the sting, needing fast medical attention to deal with the toxin.
